Week 6
This week was Mid-term week. Before I go into the mid-term, I will briefly mention the reading we had. It was called “The Yellow Wall-Paper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I must admit it was a very strange and weird read. It was not easy to follow, but not hard to read. I think I am still wondering if she was actually the lady in the wall paper or not. It was a very psycological story, almot like a mind teaser, engaging and confusing the reader at the same time. I guess that is what really interested me about this writing. I came to no concrete conclusion and honestly I don’t know if anyone ever did. I am sure a lot of literature annalists will have many theories, but I prefer to stay with my own interpretation, which allows me to a possibility of different conclusions. I think I liked that though because in a lot of my work I try to leave my narratives open-ended and opened to interpretation because I believe that subjectivity is what makes us curious, and I hope for the viewer to find my photographs curious.
Anyway, for the mid-term we had to bring in 5-6 images for the critique, one of which had to be new to the class. Because my final review is getting closer and closer I felt I had to work on my thesis opposed to some other crazy project I would come up with. Lately, because I feel that my thesis is lacking physical tangibility (being it all digital based) I decided to try something very different. I got rid of the color, and instead of having the composites done on Photoshop, I manually made them myself, adding a 3D feel to the work. I felt the need to do this because I need to make things with my hands. The satisfaction of building something other than in Photoshop has become very important for me, my work and my concept. Although we needed 5-6 images, and I did not want to bring in anything that I had previously shown, I created 4 new images and added one of the “Photo-booth” assignment just because it fit via the process of how the photo was physically layered, but not with concept. The images I re-edited from my thesis were the following:
Although I quite like this new approach, maybe the absence of color is too extreme and I should try this same thing with color. Also, because they are 3D images, it is difficult to show them accurately or even justly with a digital version.
